Should Yuanmingyuan Be Rebuilt?

Yuanmingyuan, “Garden of all gardens”, was burnt and fell into ruins in 1860. Recently my clas*ates had a discussion about whether it should be rebuilt or not.

Supporters of rebuilding the garden say only by doing so can we see the original sight of the garden, which reflects the Chinese civilization. And it will be another place of interest for tourists. If partly rebuilt, it will provide a comparison and help us remember the history.

Those who disagree think it more reasonable to keep the garden like this. The ruins will remind us of the past. We should never forget the history. Other buildings like Palace Museum and Summer Palace can also be symbols of the Chinese culture, so it isn’t necessary to rebuild this garden. Some also worry that the environment will be destroyed when the construction goes on in this district.

Personally, it is advisable to rebuild Yuanmingyuan , which will add beauty to the city . What’s more , the new scenic spot will no doubt promote the economic development of the local.

What Is Beautiful

what is beautiful, people like to wear beautifulclothes,if we print some colorful pads of some wordson them.the clothes will become more attractive.Butthe meaning of the words on them must be lovelytoo. I am sorry to say that some people pay noattention on this. Now please look at the picture.thegirl in the new jacket looks pretty indeed.but theEnglish words on the jacket are quite different.Doyou think a snake is beautiful?Do people take a pride been a personal. of course not. and onother two jackets are writing kiss me and foolish.Do you think the girl is foolish. If the girl knowthe meaning of words on it.she probably will not buy suchjacket. So I think everyone shouldknow what is beautiful and what is not.

My Chinese Dream

When someone asks me: What is your Chinese dream? I will answer it without any hesitation: to be a good doctor. The reason why I want to be a doctor is that I want to save people’s lives as possible as I can. When I was young, I had a terrible car accident. Thanks to the doctors, they brought me back to life. From then on, to be a good doctor has always been an inspiration to me. I will study hard to make sure that my dream will come true in the future.

My home town is a beautiful place. It stands beside a wide river and is rich in fish and rice.

But in the old days it was a poor and backward little town. Many people had no work. They lived a hard life.

In 1949 my hometown was liberated. Since then great changes have taken place there. The streets have been widened. Factories, schools, hospitals, cinemas and theatres have sprung up one after another. The life of the people is greatly improved.

I love my hometown. All the more I love its people. They are working hard so as to make it still richer and more beautiful.

Students and Technology in the Classroom

I love my blackberry—it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me 。 I also love my laptop computer ,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts 。Despite this love of technology ,I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and truly communicat with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas 。Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom ,I have a rule —no laptop ,iPads ,phones ,etc 。When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy 。

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology 。 There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology 。 There’s no truth in that at all 。 I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas 。 I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course the material and the class discussion 。

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create 。Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom 。

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change ,I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

63.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with____

A. the course material B. others’ misuse of technology

C. discussion topics D. the author’s class regulations

64.The underlined word "engage ”in para.4 probably means ____

A. explore B. accept C. change D. reject

65.According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ____

A. keep students from doing independent thinking

B. encourage students to have in-depth conversations

C. help students to better understand complex themes

D. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation

66.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ____

A. is quite stubborn

B. will give up teaching history

C. will change his teaching plan soon

D. values technology-free dialogues in his class

The internet will open up new vistas (前景),creat the global village- -you can make new friends all around the world. That,at least, is what it promised us. The difficulty is that

It did not take the human mind into account. The reality is that we cannot keep relationship than a limited number of people. No matter how hard the internet tries to put

You in communication, its best efforts will be defeated by your mind.

The problem is twofold(双重的)。 First, there is a limit on the number of people we can hole in mind and have a meaningful relationship with. That number is about 150 and is set by the size of our brain. Second, the quality of your relationships depends on the amount of time you invest (投入) in then. We invest a lot in a *all number of people and then distribute what’s left among as many others as we can. The problem is that if we invest little time in a person, our engagement with that person will decline (减弱)until eventually it dies into "someone I once knew”。

This is not, of course, to say that the internet doesn’t serve a socially valuable function. Of course it does. But the question is not that it allows you to increase the size of your social circle to include the rest of the world, but that you can keep your relationships with your existing friends going even though you have to more to the other side of the world.

In one sense, that’s a good thing. But it also has a disadvantage. If you continue to invest in your old friends even though you can no longer see then, then certainly you aren’t using your time to make new friends where you now live.

And I suspect that probably isn’t the best use of your time. Meaningful relationships are about being able to communicate with each other, face to face. The internet will slow down the rate with which relationships end, but it won’t stop that happening eventually.

72. What is stressed in the first paragraph?

A. The present situation of the internet.

B. The difficulty in communication on the internet.

C. The socially valuable function of the internet.

D. The role of the human mind in the internet communication.

73. The underlined word "engagement” in the second paragraph probably means "____”。

A. appointment B. connection C. interview D. agreement

74. According to the passenger, the author holds the view that____。

A. the internet fails to play so valuable a role in communication as it promised

B. the internet determines the quality of social relationships

C. the internet greatly increases the size of social circles

D. the internet communication is no less effective than the

face-to-face talk

75. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of the internet to strengthen relationships?

A. He is uncertain about it. B. He is hopeful of it.

C. He approves of it. D. He doubts it.

A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. "Wait a minute" someone might say, "are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?“

The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase (公文包) and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, "Hello, class. I‘m Mr. Davis." Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.

I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.

"All right then," I said. "Okey, here we go." Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forests of hands. Every student would yell. "Calm down, you‘ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”

A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.

36. The author took the job to teach writing because ______。

A. he wanted to be expected

B. he had written some storied

C. he wanted to please his father

D. he had dreamed of being a teacher

37. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 2?

A. He would be aggressive in his first class.

B. He was well-prepared for his first class.

C. He got nervous upon the arrival of his first class.

D. He waited long for the arrival of his first class.

38. Before he started his class, the author asked the students to ______。

A. write down their suggestions on the paper cards

B. cut maple leaves out of the construction paper

C. cut some cards out of the construction paper

D. write down their names on the paper cards

39. What did the students do when the author started his class?

A. They began to talk.

B. They stayed silent.

C. They raised their hands.

D. They shouted to be heard.

40. The author chose the composition topic probably because ______。

A. he got disappointed with his first class

B. he had prepared the topic before class
