I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said you could buy tickets at the theatre box any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and the theatre is not good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes. By the time I saw one come, there was not enough time left to make the trip. So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line at the box office, and I heard one man say he had been waiting for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was expensive, but it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

  21. The man learned from _______ that there would be a concert on Friday.

  A. the bus stop B. the theatre box C. one man in line D. the newspaper

  22. He tried to go to the theatre every day but managed to get there only _______.

  24. The underlined word “relieved” may best be replaced by _______.

  A. pleased B. surprised C. puzzled D. sorry

When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

25.Mr Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ________.

A.to show his magical power. B.to pay for the delivery

C.to satisfy his curiosity. D.to please his mother.

.What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?

A.He was treated as a family member. B.He was fully trusted by the family. C.He wanted to have tea there. D.He was a respectable person.

.Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A.Its service is getting poor. B.It is forbidden by law.

C.Nobody wants to be a milkman now. D.It has been driven out of the market.

.Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A.He missed it for his milk bottles. B.He wanted to tell interesting stories. C.He missed the good old days. D.He planted flowers in it. C

It was the first snow of winter — an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but l think she may still remember this one. I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and I wondered why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots.”

I handed her my boots and stuck out my feet. After much pushing, she got the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

I said, “They’re on the wrong feet.” With the grace that only experience can bring, she got the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, “These aren’t my boots, you know.” Once they were off, I said, “They are my brother’s boots. I hate them!” Somehow, she acted as if I wasn’t an annoying little girl. She pushed, and the boots were on my feet. With a sigh of relief, she asked, “Now, where are your gloves?” I looked at her and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I put them into my boots.”

  29. According to the passage, the little girl got ________ from her brother.

  A. the wool snow pants and the scarf B. the jacket and the boots

  C. the jacket and the hat D. the boots and the gloves

  30. What made it so hard for the teacher to help the little girl put her boots on?

  A. The gloves in the toes of the boots. B. The slowness of the teacher.

  C. The wrong size of the boots. D. The unwillingness of the girl.

  31. When the author went out to enjoy the first snow, her teacher had put on her boots ________.

  A. five times B. twice C. three times D. four times

  32. The girl could best be described as ________.

  A. kind but impolite B. helpful but funny C. clever but naughty D. nice but lazy
